{"id":362,"date":"2017-12-08T19:54:01","date_gmt":"2017-12-08T19:54:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/economicdevelopment\/?p=362"},"modified":"2017-12-08T19:57:59","modified_gmt":"2017-12-08T19:57:59","slug":"economic-development-monthly-report-november-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/economicdevelopment\/2017\/12\/08\/economic-development-monthly-report-november-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Economic Development \u2013 Monthly Report \u2013 November 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Commercial Properties (vacancies, new businesses, etc.): <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>Sandy Marketplace<\/u>:\u00a0 The Joy Teriyaki buildout continues.\u00a0 They have been going through a company-wide expansion and opening new locations in a number of different places in the metro area, including a store that just opened at the new Fred Meyer complex on Sunnyside Road in Happy Valley.\u00a0 Joy\u2019s owner hinted that their focus will be shifting to Sandy now, and they anticipate that their store will be open in about 6 weeks if all goes according to plan.<\/p>\n<p><u>Sandy Fire #72<\/u>: As you can probably tell, the Fire Station renovation project is getting close to completion, and it seems to be turning out wonderfully.\u00a0 Chief Schneider estimates project completion before the end of January.\u00a0 A very nice upgrade to downtown Sandy!<\/p>\n<p><u>Next Adventure<\/u>:\u00a0 Sandy\u2019s newest outdoor gear retailer had their open house event on 12\/1, and it was very well attended by Council, the Chamber board and Sandy citizens at large.\u00a0 The company spared no expense at this event, and it\u2019s super nice to see a retailer do some serious promotion to launch their business in a new community, especially in a small town like Sandy\u2026.it really goes a long way.\u00a0 Thanks to all of you who welcomed Deek and Bryan to town, and it sounds like they are going to be in Sandy for the long haul.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/economicdevelopment\/files\/2017\/12\/NA-ribbon-cutting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-361\" src=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/economicdevelopment\/files\/2017\/12\/NA-ribbon-cutting.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/economicdevelopment\/files\/2017\/12\/NA-ribbon-cutting.jpg 800w, https:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/economicdevelopment\/files\/2017\/12\/NA-ribbon-cutting-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/economicdevelopment\/files\/2017\/12\/NA-ribbon-cutting-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/economicdevelopment\/files\/2017\/12\/NA-ribbon-cutting-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><u>SACC<\/u>: The Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce\u2019s \u201cShop Local\u201d coupon books (all 400 of \u2018em) were distributed for free at the Xmas Tree Lighting on the 1<sup>st<\/sup>.\u00a0 We had a very strong response to this idea from both participating businesses and downtown patrons \u2013 there seems to be a very strong \u201cbuy local\u201d sentiment in our culture right now.\u00a0 And although it might be a bit early to evaluate, early responses from participating businesses say that citizens are using them.\u00a0 More to come.<\/p>\n<p><u>Fleischman properties<\/u>:\u00a0 We are still standing by to receive bids for the proposed ADA accessibility work at the rear of Mr. Fleischman\u2019s two properties on Pioneer Blvd.\u00a0 To recap, we have proposed to contribute urban renewal funds (up to 1\/3 of the project cost) as an incentive to get this work completed sooner rather than later and to complete the code requirements for the old bead shop space, which is now occupied and being used as an office by the creator of Ilusive Brand Snowwear.\u00a0 This will allow him to focus all of his energy on his primary project: rehabbing the old boarding house and leasing it in the near future as an office building.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Fleischman recently confirmed with us verbally that he would like to take advantage of this offer.\u00a0 However, we have yet to receive any bids for this work.\u00a0 If there was anyone on City Council that could gently remind him that the City is eager to get this work started, that might be very helpful.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><strong>Project work:\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Fa\u00e7ade project \u2013 City Hall Enclosures<\/u>: Posts have been installed, and as I look out my window I see our contractor beginning to roll out the fencing for install.\u00a0 This project will be complete in the next couple of days, and will bring City Hall into compliance with our own municipal code<\/li>\n<li><u>Facade project &#8211; Joe\u2019s Donuts<\/u>: Full Throttle Construction is well into the project now, and the results are starting to show.\u00a0 Exterior building repairs are complete, and painting is underway.\u00a0 So if you see some interesting patterns on the building in December\u2026.it\u2019s just the painters doing their thing.\u00a0 And yes, they will be painting the building exactly the same as it is painted now (except there will be taped, straight lines instead of hand drawn lines), so please let the citizenry know that torches and pitchforks will not be necessary at the ribbon cutting.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li><u>The 2017 City of Sandy Xmas Tree Lighting Ceremony<\/u>: Once again, an absolutely phenomenal event that went off without a hitch.\u00a0 Special thanks to our food and beverage providers (Sandy Starbucks, Busy Bee Catering, The Tollgate Bakery, Mountain Moka and AntFarm Caf\u00e9) \u2013 please thank them for their donations again if you happen to run into them socially.\u00a0 Also, thanks to the SHS Choir and Choir Director Chase, DJ Anderson of Suburban for emceeing the event, Jim Allison (Santa), and all of the volunteers who helped (Tammy Krushwitz\u2019 Girl Scout Troop for helping with the cocoa, U.S. World Class Taekwondo for general help, the Museum for staying open late and providing clean bathrooms and kids crafts, and Sandy Helping Hands!!!)This year, we added a couple of items to the event.\u00a0 First, the SACC distributed 400 \u201cShop Local\u201d coupon books to citizens at the event free of charge.\u00a0 These coupon books give some pretty decent discounts from our downtown Chamber members and encourage folks to shop at our Sandy businesses instead of malls in Portland.\u00a0 Participants are already seeing the coupons come back!\u00a0 The SACC will expand this next year (but no more freebies &#8212; we\u2019re gonna charge $1 for a coupon book next year!)The other huge addition was the use of the Sandy Shoppers Trolley to give free rides to Councilor Hamblin\u2019s neighborhood to see the holiday light displays at his house and along his street.\u00a0 People absolutely love that trolley, and I couldn\u2019t think of a better way to showcase it than this.\u00a0 Sandy Helping Hands volunteered to load and unload passengers and help keep cars and kids out of the museum parking lot, so extra kudos to Machel at SHH for all the help.\u00a0 There has been some mention of Councilor Hamblin encouraging his neighbors to get into the spirit next year and expand the light displays, working toward a day in the future when maybe Sandy has its own version of Peacock Lane.No word on whether or not the infamous \u201cBuddy the Elf\u201d costume made an appearance or not.\u00a0 It definitely should though.\u00a0 Next year, Counselor Hamblin.\u00a0 No excuses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Sandy Arts Commission<\/u>: Work continues\u2026<\/li>\n<li><u>NorthStar \u2013 branding project<\/u>: Work continues\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Conferences\/training:\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>None this month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Commercial Properties (vacancies, new businesses, etc.): Sandy Marketplace:\u00a0 The Joy Teriyaki buildout continues.\u00a0 They have been going through a company-wide expansion and opening new locations in a number of different places in the metro area, including a store that just &hellip;
