{"id":433,"date":"2014-11-12T20:12:39","date_gmt":"2014-11-12T20:12:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/?p=433"},"modified":"2014-11-12T22:17:01","modified_gmt":"2014-11-12T22:17:01","slug":"library-activities-october-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/2014\/11\/12\/library-activities-october-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Library Activities: October 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Programs\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Saturday Afternoon Kids&#8217; Club<\/p>\n<p>October was our first month hosting a weekly Kids&#8217; Club at the Sandy Library. \u00a0Kids&#8217; Club is appropriate for Kids age 7-12. \u00a0All events are free, no registration is required.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Week 1 &#8211; LEGO\u00a0Club<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-453\" src=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/IMG_18201-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Haunted House\" width=\"194\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/IMG_18201-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/IMG_18201-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/IMG_18201-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/>Our very first Kids&#8217; Club event was LEGO Club. \u00a0Three kids made fantastic LEGO creations which were displayed in the Library for the remainder of the month. \u00a0After the event we had a large number of people express interest in coming to our next one. Come in to see our current months&#8217; display of LEGO creations in the Kids&#8217; Room of the Library. \u00a0We expect that this program will grow considerably!<\/p>\n<p>Week 2 &#8211; Card and Board Games<\/p>\n<p>Ten people came to our first monthly board game afternoon. \u00a0This turned out to be a great family time. \u00a0Kids have been coming in all month to talk about the games they plan to bring to the next event in November.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Week 3 &#8211; Drop-In Craft<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Kids decorated pumpkins, did leaf rubbings, and created fall inspired art at our drop in craft. Library Staff created\u00a0a Minecraft server which 6 laptop computers connect to. Standard\u00a0Minecraft can be played\u00a0(Survival, Creative, etc.), or Minecraft.edu which allows creation of specials &#8220;seeds&#8221; where kids must complete specific tasks. Seeds can be used as a type of lesson plan. Staff plans to create seeds for upcoming months and build a replica of the Sandy Library within the game to be used as an information literacy instructional aid. Kids were also able to play Wii games and build \u00a0paper Minecraft characters.<\/p>\n<p>Trick or Treat Trail<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-446\" src=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/TorTTrail42-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"TorTTrail4\" width=\"169\" height=\"221\" \/>Sandy Library participated in the Main Street event Trick or Treat Trail. \u00a0We handed out more than 600 pieces of candy to trick-or-treaters and gave each one an opportunity to win a glow stick by playing corn hole.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_439\" style=\"width: 135px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/photo-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-439\" class=\"wp-image-439\" src=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/photo-6-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mincraft costumes\" width=\"125\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/photo-6-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/photo-6.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-439\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Minecraft characters at Trick or Treat Trail<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/TorTTrail3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-443\" src=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/TorTTrail3-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"TorTTrail3\" width=\"142\" height=\"186\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Library Coffee House<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-428\" src=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/10\/10670130_10152642960132626_7458528890410522239_n-208x300.jpg\" alt=\"10670130_10152642960132626_7458528890410522239_n\" width=\"116\" height=\"165\" \/>First Friday on October 4th brought the Coffee House into the library. \u00a0Local writer Dan Bosserman signed copies of his book Images of America: Boring. \u00a0In addition,\u00a0Sandy residents we serenaded by Portland&#8217;s French troubadour, Eric John Kaiser who presented a lively\u00a0evening of ballads and folk songs in\u00a0French and English .<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>NaNoWriMo<\/p>\n<p>November is National Novel Writing Month! \u00a0The Sandy Library has committed to getting the community involved in this national project, and providing coffee and space for writers to write in the Library. <span style=\"color: #222222\">14\u00a0community members came to\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0Kick-off party on\u00a0October 23rd.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/TorTTrail3.jpg\"><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222\">Pirate Program<\/span><\/a>\u00a0&#8211; in partnership\u00a0with retired teachers from the Oregon Trail School District<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222\">On\u00a0October 28th three classes of 6th graders, each with 38 students visited the library to learn how to do research. Questions were designed to have students learn how to use the library catalog to locate books on the shelf as well as use databases that can help them with homework.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sandy and Hoodland Teen Advisory Board<\/p>\n<p>The Teen Advisory Board met for the first time at the end of October. \u00a0Four kids came to the first meeting. \u00a0We brainstormed ideas for teen programs to hold at the library, talked about the results of the library survey that we gave out at both library locations, ate pizza, and talked about how to advertise to get more kids to come to our next meeting in November (spolier: November&#8217;s meeting had 14 teens attend!). \u00a0The first teen program we plan to hold will be in January.<\/p>\n<p>The Evening Mystery Book Club has come to an end, leaving 3 clubs left active. Library Staff are\u00a0working to meet the needs of the remaining clubs by offering additional services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Display and Marketing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222\">Patrons checked out 13 items from our October adult book display &#8212;\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"color: #222222\">Things that go Bump <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-461\" src=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/DisplayOCT-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DisplayOCT\" width=\"186\" height=\"141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/DisplayOCT-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/DisplayOCT-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/DisplayOCT-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/>in the Night<\/b><span style=\"color: #222222\">. Stephen King, Ann Rule, and Edgar Allan Poe are quite popular in Sandy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the library hosted a great display about personal collections. \u00a0The display featured books about collecting, and samples of teacups, depression glass, sea shells and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Staff<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-460 \" src=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/halloween2014-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"halloween2014\" width=\"234\" height=\"178\" \/>Library Staff got into the spirit and dressed up for October 31st. \u00a0Many came as book related characters.<\/p>\n<p>In October, we said goodbye to a full-time Library Assistant who moved to join her family in the Midwest. \u00a0We interviewed nine candidates and hired two permanent half-time Library Assistants. \u00a0Katie Murphy and Thea Kuziemski may look familiar to you as they have been on-call staff at the library for years. \u00a0We&#8217;re so excited to have them officially join our permanent team!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/Katie_Web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-454\" src=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/Katie_Web.jpg\" alt=\"Katie_Web\" width=\"200\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/Thea.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-455\" src=\"http:\/\/reports.cityofsandy.com\/library\/files\/2014\/11\/Thea.jpg\" alt=\"Thea\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hiring Katie and Thea left a large hole in our on-call availability, which led to the hiring of two new on-call staff that had been identified through current and previous interview pools as good Library Clerk possibilities. \u00a0We welcome Kat Aden and Julie Steeves as on-call Library Clerks! \u00a0They have been fully trained and can be seen pitching in as we need them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Programs\u00a0 Saturday Afternoon Kids&#8217; Club October was our first month hosting a weekly Kids&#8217; Club at the Sandy Library. \u00a0Kids&#8217; Club is appropriate for Kids age 7-12. \u00a0All events are free, no registration is required.
