June Parks & Recreation

Carol:

June was the Longest Day Parkway, the Tom Petty concert, and Noah’s Quest.

This year was the 21st year for Noah’s Quest. It was a perfect day for everyone to be together. We had over 15 volunteers helping out on the course and at registration tables. We released bubbles at the beginning before the kiddie run. The weekend getaway is a house in Astoria and it is something that gets raffled off every year. This year a new family that just experienced a loss won the weekend getaway.

Caroleana:

Caroleana had over 216 senior related calls this month.

The center had 2 new clients and 2 Reassessments for current clients; which involved a home visit with each client and a completed NAPIS form for Clackamas County.

Helped the team this month by packing coolers several times and running a route.

We continued to hold congregate lunches on Tuesdays.  In the month of June we served on 5 Tuesdays, with a total of 113 meals served in the month.   Those who attended senior lunch service donated $230 towards the nutrition program for the month of June.

Clackamas County Energy Assistance summer program started this month and Caroleana helped 18 households with their submission of applications.   We received multiple calls for energy assistance.

Made the July and August calendars for the senior newsletter.

Helped coordinate three new Lunch and Learns for the summer.

Helped at Longest Day parkway; assisted with the setup for a city-sponsored event and post-event breakdown and cleanup.

Caroleana started to prepare her files for the end of the fiscal year, cleaning up client files and tracking annual reports needed.

Senior Trips

  • Trillium Lake Loop Hike and Lunch at Huckleberry Inn in Government Camp. The loop is finally open all the way around the lake! Last time we were there part of the boardwalk was under construction and we couldn’t go all the way around. We had ten people for this one but unfortunately one was a no show.                                                                                                                                                                                                                IMG_0122.jpg
  • Dine out at Old Spaghetti Factory in Clackamas. 11 people.
  • Oregon Military Museum at the National Guard Base Camp Withycombe in Happy Valley and lunch afterwards at Red Robin in Clackamas. This was a very cool museum and one of the volunteers gave us a very informative private tour. Only four signed up for this one unfortunately but we loved it. A couple of them went on the hike the next week and were talking about it and got others interested and they want to go again.                       IMG_0127.jpgIMG_0128.jpg
  • Hike at Tryon Creek State Natural Area in Portland with lunch afterwards at Pietro’s Pizza in Milwaukie. This place is beautiful! First time going for quite a few of them, myself included. Will definitely go again. 13 people signed up for this one but we had another no show.                                                                                                                                                                                                             IMG_0135.jpg
  • Dine out at Rendezvous Grill in Welches. Full bus with 3 people meeting us there.
  • Prineville Western Days. It’s a long way to Prineville but it was worth it. Expected it to be a bit bigger though but the music was definitely good. Some of the seniors even got out and danced!IMG_0144.jpgIMG_0142.jpgIMG_1808.jpg

Meals on Wheels

Miscellaneous

  • Completed one of my Ride Connection classes that need to be done every three years.
  • Made a Costco run to get hot dogs and buns for Longest Day Parkway.
  • Worked Longest Day Parkway. This one is always fun to work and we had a lot better weather compared to last year’s event!

Chelsea:

  • Assisted with processing invoices related to various park projects.
  • Continued to monitor the budget for Deer Pointe park and Meinig Park Renovations.
  • Once we had a signed contract for the Meinig park improvements, I submitted the BOLI paperwork and CCB paperwork.
  • Attended the Parks Board Parks meeting, recorded and posted the recording, and wrote up the minutes.
  • Park rentals and center rentals are still very in demand.
  • Continued to communicate with the Bornstedt House property manager on interest in the house.
  • Sent Park rental schedules for the parks team.
  • Attended 2 pre-construction meetings for the Meinig Park improvements.
  • Worked the one and only summer concert at Meinig. This event had a great turn out and the vendors enjoyed selling pizza and drinks during the event.
  • Ordered supplies for Longest Day parkway. We opted to give out ducks again as they were a hit last year.
  • Made a few no fireworks signs for our parks that we’ve had issues with in the past.
  • Created and printed/mailed out the July & August Senior Newsletter.

  • Created printed menus for Tuesday lunches and set up calendar reminders for days we’re asking for menu changes.
  • I took a vacation in June so I pre-printed daily event signs, and double checked rentals. It’s pretty common that renters forget to send us their signed rental agreements within the 7 day window so we often have to follow up 1-3 times to ensure we have all signed agreements.

John:

Adult Softball League
Our adult softball league is officially underway with 12 teams participating this season. During the first two weeks of league play, Carol and I attended each game to check in with coaches, umpires, and players. These visits provided an opportunity to answer questions, address concerns, ensure league operations were running smoothly, and strengthen relationships with participants.
Summer Concert Series
Our first—and only—Summer Concert Series event took place on June 16 at Meinig Park. Due to the ongoing Meinig Park Improvement Project, the City hosted just one concert this year. The featured band, Petty Fever, delivered an outstanding performance to an estimated crowd of 500 attendees. Despite the abbreviated concert season, the event was well attended and provided a memorable evening for the community.
Noah’s Quest
I assisted Carol with planning and executing Noah’s Quest by providing support with event setup, logistics, financial coordination, and volunteer management. The event was successful thanks to the collaborative efforts of staff and volunteers.
The Drop In
Planning continued throughout the month for The Drop In, Sandy’s Skate, Bike, and Community Festival scheduled for August. Planning meetings focused on finalizing the event budget, identifying and securing remaining sponsorships and funding, coordinating staff and volunteer roles, and continuing operational planning to ensure a successful inaugural event.
Sandy Invitational Chainsaw Competition (SICC)
I checked in on the Sandy Invitational Chainsaw Competition (SICC), specifically the tree ascension program held along Tickle Creek. The site was well prepared, safe, and provided local children with the opportunity to safely harness into and climb trees under professional supervision. It was exciting to see one of Sandy’s premier natural assets used to connect youth with the outdoors while showcasing a unique educational component of the event.

Parks & Facilities:

 The Meinig Park Renovation Project has been awarded to Paul Brothers Inc., and
construction is scheduled to begin on July 14.
 Parks and Facility Maintenance completed a combined 40 hours of fuels reduction work
along the Tickle Creek Trail between Bridge 1 and Bridge 4.

 A hazardous tree was removed from Tupper Park to improve public safety.

 Our seasonal team member has quickly become a valuable part of the team and is working diligently to clean up the many easement paths throughout the city.

 Ryan continues to manage several deferred maintenance projects at City facilities while
responding to ongoing daily repair and maintenance requests, helping ensure City facilities
remain safe, functional, and well maintained.
