July Parks & Recreation

Carol:

July started off with another successful 4th of July firework display. Due to it being 250th anniversary the show lasted longer and the display was more spectacular. Thanks to Clackamas County Bank for sponsoring another exciting event.

Mt. Festival started on July 8th with the Pet Show and we had two highland cows which was a big hit! The 9th was the Bike Challenge at Cedar Park. It was another huge success because we had different stations for the kids to participate while they biked around the park. Rock Haven was there and they had a slack line to support the event. July 10th was the Kids Parade and that brought over 175 people and we had some of our local vendors. Whippersnappers had a bouncy house that had long lines to get into. The Mt. Hood Athletic Club had photos with Spiderman and Ariel. The Tae Kwon Do business had blocks for kids to split while kicking. Thanks to CCB and Scoop n Swirl for the free hotdogs and ice cream.

The end of July we offered a beginner Mt. Bike camp from July 27th-
30th . Ages 6-9 and 10-13. The first 3 days we utilized the whole park at
Base Camp and even worked on the trail that goes down to the Sandy
River. The last day we all went to Tickle Creek. The kids had a blast and
it was so much fun.

The Softball tournament started on July 31st and ended on August 2nd .
We had 12 teams and the Hoodlums won the Championship and was
undefeated the whole season.

Amy:

– The Mt Festival Kids Events were a HUGE success!

– Helped to interview, hire, and train three new building monitors.

Caroleana:

Caroleana had over 154 senior related calls this month.

The center had 2 new clients; which involved a home visit with each client and a completed NAPIS form for Clackamas County.

Helped the team this month by packing coolers several times and running a route.

We continued to hold congregate lunches on Tuesdays.  In the month of July we served on 4 Tuesdays, with a total of 100 meals served in the month.   Those who attended senior lunch service donated $135 towards the nutrition program for the month of June.

Clackamas County Energy Assistance summer program started this month and Caroleana helped 9 households with their submission of applications. We received multiple calls for energy assistance.

Updated volunteer tracking forms for clackamas county.

Helped coordinate three new Lunch and Learns for the summer.

On July 17 we held a senior BBQ for our community and 45 people attended.  All had a great time and enjoyed a delicious meal.  I shopped for the event and helped facilitate.

Caroleana started to prepare her files for the end of the fiscal year, cleaning up client files and tracking annual reports needed.

Thanked our Meals on Wheels sponsors on the reader board and sent them pictures.

Senior Trips:

  • Dine Out at Dragon Palace in Gresham. Full bus with 3 meeting us there.
  • Hike at Little ZigZag Falls and lunch at Chuki’s Grill Hawaiian BBQ in Welches. 13 Seniors and Amy back to join us for her first outing in a while!
  • Dine out at Gustav’s in Vancouver. Full bus.
  • Rose City Vintage Market at Portland Expo Center. 10 seniors. Very nice market but not as big as we expected as it was in only one of the halls there. They definitely want to go back again next year but we will stop for lunch first since options were limited.
  • Great Oregon Steam Up at Powerland Heritage Park in Brooks. 9 seniors.  This one was fun! Most of us had never been. Definitely did not allow enough time. That place is huge with lots of museums and lots of stuff going on including a big swap meet. We will definitely be going back next year and allow more time!
  • Hike at Cook Family Park in Tigard and lunch at 60’s Cafe in Tualatin. 12 seniors with Amy joining us again. Luckily she was there because one of them wore out quickly so she took them back and waited by the bus.

  • Small Group Swim Lessons
  • Outdoor Family Swim Passes

This collaboration continues to provide affordable aquatic recreation opportunities for Sandy residents while maximizing community partnerships.

Building Monitors play an important role in the operation of the Sandy Community and Senior Center by:

  • Supervising evening and weekend facility rentals and recreation programs.
  • Assisting renters, instructors, and contractors with facility needs.
  • Completing janitorial responsibilities to ensure facilities remain clean and welcoming.
  • Performing administrative and facility support tasks that help maintain smooth daily operations.

Hiring these positions will help ensure consistent customer service, facility oversight, and operational support during after-hours programming.

Responsibilities included:

  • Assisting with candidate interviews.
  • Asking standardized interview questions.

Participation on cross-departmental interview panels strengthens collaboration between City departments and supports the City’s overall recruitment efforts.

Continued planning efforts for The Drop-In competition, with a significant emphasis placed on event safety and emergency preparedness.
Coordinated a comprehensive planning meeting with representatives from:

  • Sandy Police Department
  • Clackamas Fire District
  • Mt. Wave Search and Rescue

The purpose of the meeting was to review event operations, identify potential risks, establish emergency response procedures, clarify agency responsibilities, and ensure coordinated communication among all responding partners. This collaborative planning helps ensure the event is well-prepared to safely accommodate competitors, spectators, volunteers, and vendors.
