Monthly Report – December 2016

Fiber Network

Growth continues on the fiber network. In 2016 we added 396 customers to the network accounting for approximately a 20% increase in our customer base. SandyNet staff has been working diligently to keep up with the demand for service.

Weather has caused delays for construction this month which is putting us behind on getting customers connected again. This is very frustrating but unfortunately outside of our control, water is an essential component in underground construction and when temperatures dip below freezing it is a risk to our crew and our equipment to perform construction tasks. We are looking forward to temperatures getting back in the 40s and 50s.

MDU Deployment

We have sent a proposal for construction to an MDU property in Sandy that we would like to start or G.Fast deployment with. We are waiting to hear back from them for approval but hope to have this site deployed in January or February (weather permitting).

Urban Renewal District

This project has been awarded and construction is set to start in the second or third week of January. Again, construction of this nature is heavily influenced by weather, so delays may be in store if nature does not cooperate with our plans.

Monthly Report – October 2016

Fiber Network

Residential request for service continues to track at a strong pace. We have had some difficulties with a serious illness of one of our staff members that is slowing the team down a bit and making it difficult to meet demand. In order to resolve this issue we are bringing contractors in to enable us to get caught up on drop construction and allow us to focus on installing customers and getting G.Fast up and working.

We are making good progress on G.Fast deployment now that we have received some long awaited software updates from our manufacturer. I hope to have at least one apartment complex deployed by the end of the year.

Urban Renewal District

We are awaiting responses on a request for proposals on construction for this project. Stay tuned for updates.

Monthly Report – September 2016

Fiber Network

Demand for residential FTTH connections continues at a steady rate. We are working diligently to keep up with demand but have encountered some health related issues recently with some of the team that will impact productivity over the next several months.

In new neighborhood developments fiber infrastructure is being installed. We have provisioned service in new neighborhoods like American Street and Sunflower. Snowberry is almost completely built out with homes and we have been adding services there steadily. We also constructed infrastructure in the Champion Village neighborhood (by the movie theater) to ensure we have service available when homes are ready for occupancy there.

A network extension on Kelso Rd was completed this month in conjunction with a water line extension. The SandyNet team did a great job of placing cable and splicing the entire route, all work has been done in house.

Urban Renewal District

Engineering is complete for this project. We are working on getting permit applications prepared as well as drafting an RFP for construction. I hope to have the RFP published by the end of the October. Depending on timelines and responses from contractors we will start construction this fall.

Monthly Report – July 2016

Fiber to the Home

We continue to see a consistent level of signups for service which is keeping the SandyNet staff very busy. The team is constructing 5 – 8 new service drops per week and performing 12-15 service installs per week. The take rate throughout the city is steadily growing, 65% of homes in our service area have requested connections to the fiber network. We currently have about 55% of the homes active on the service.

The 100 Mbps fiber service was upgraded to 300 Mbps at no cost to our subscribers this month. This update was received very well by our users and everyone seems to be enjoying the faster speeds.

Urban Renewal District

Engineering is underway for the fiber project in the urban renewal district. You may notice a few extra folks walking through town in safety vests with measuring wheels as they verify conduit paths and design new building drop connections.

Urban Renewal District

Work continues in the UR district. We have been developing an RFP for engineering which includes a pretty complex map set of where we need infrastructure placed. I was hoping to have this done weeks ago, but it looks like we will be able to release it in April to get progress going for construction this summer.

Next Century Cities

Councilor Pietzold and I were able to attend a regional event for Next Century Cities in Seattle this month. As usual, SandyNet’s story was very popular as a lot of communities look to following our example with fiber for their communities.

Monthly Report – October 2015

Fiber to the Home

All construction activity is complete for the project. Final invoices have been submitted and are in processing. Service activations currently sit at just under 1700 active customers which means we have captured approximately 86% of the homes who pre-ordered the fiber service. We are continuing to reach out to the remaining 14% that have yet to be activated. Additionally we are receiving new orders at a rate that is proving to be difficult to keep up with from a drop construction perspective. We currently have about a 3 month wait for service provisioning if there is not an existing fiber drop at the premise.

Project Category % Complete
Conduit Installation 100%
Cable Placement 100%
Splicing 100%
Drop Installation 100%
Service Activation 86%

MDU Buildings

We are exploring some new technologies that may make deploying apartment complexes a lot simpler and much more cost effective while still allowing us to provision 100 Mbps and Gigabit data services. As this area develops we will keep council in the loop.

Urban Renewal District

Construction is underway on the distribution network portion of the urban renewal district for fiber services. Crews are currently working on getting fiber installed to all existing vaults in the urban renewal district which will enable us to move on to the next phase of the project, connecting the drops from the vaults up to the business.

Monthly Report – August 2015

Internal Network Upgrades

We have made several enhancements to the City’s internal network including the installation of a new Storage Area Network enhancing the capacity and performance of our file systems and servers. We have also installed a new server to add additional redundancy to our virtualized server environment.

Upcoming improvements that are in progress include a new phone system upgrade to our back end server that runs the phones as well as the distribution of 30 new desktop computers to various departments throughout the City.

Hoodland Library

IT Staff worked with Library staff to get the new Hoodland Library location connected to the City’s network with fiber. The CBX fiber infrastructure that was deployed by Clackamas County made this possibly at a very low cost. Patrons of the Hoodland Library can enjoy the same technology amenities as the Sandy Library users with ultra-high speed internet connectivity.

Asphalt and concrete restoration are all that remains from a construction perspective. We have been having some difficulty getting contractors to finish up this restoration work. I am continuing to work with them on getting everything resolved. SandyNet staff is working hard to get everyone installed and running on the fiber system.

Service activations are becoming a little more difficult to schedule as we are having difficulty getting in touch with some of the residents who requested a service drop. We are working on some new strategies to reach out to these residents to ensure we get everyone connected to the system that would like a connection.

Project Category % Complete

Splicing 100%

Service Activation 77%

Take Rate Update

We currently have requests for approximately 2000 home connections, 60% of all residential properties in Sandy(including MDUs which we haven’t built yet). OFS and their crews placed 1,958 drops during the scope of the project. Since May 1st, SandyNet staff has been handling the placement of new drops directly. We currently have about 25 drops pending that we are working to complete as quickly as possible while learning the techniques for placing this infrastructure.

Video Service

yondoo has officially launched their video service offering in Sandy. We are working with them to help provide information to assist their marketing efforts so they can achieve the take rates they are hoping for.

SandyNet in the News!

SandyNet Fiber made the news recently. KOIN 6 came out to do a story on the project. The city’s Facebook post sharing the story received over 9,000 views! One of our best performing posts of all time.

Video Service

Weekly meetings have been scheduled with CSI Digital to help move along the launch of the Yondoo video service.

Sling TV has launched their new internet TV product. It seems to be very polished and functions beautifully on the fiber network. It will likely be a great fit for many of the SandyNet Fiber customers.
