Library Activities: May 2020

The Libraries are getting ready for when we begin to open to the public (sometime in Phase 2 of the Governor’s Reopening Oregon Plan)!  We are moving out furniture, making staffing plans, figuring out our hours of operation, and getting signage and protective barriers in place. 

Curbside pickup of holds and seeds – #s for May:  Sandy – 711 appointments in 30 days.  This averages 23 appointments/day(up from 18 last month).  We hit our maximum # (36) of appointments on 3 days!   We started curbside pickup 3 days/week on May 4th at Hoodland –  101 appointments in 12 days.  Averages 8 appointments/day. We hit our maximum # (12) of appointments on 5 days! 

Kids Programs
Special
Every day on the Sandy Public Library Friends Facebook Page, Thea Ellen has been posting an Early Literacy Activity to do with kids, a storytime with a famous person, something about a current topic such as The Oregon Shakespeare Festival or Black Birders’ Week, and a Library resource or other current available resource.

WyEast Artisans Art Club – Created 40 DIY marionette kits to distribute at curbside pickup.

Book Clubs:
Men’s – 6 members met by Zoom to discuss The Book of Unknown Americans by  Cristina Henriquez
Women’s – Library staff member Katie Murphy led a virtual meeting with 5 book club members using Zoom and conference call.  Instead of talking about 1 book, the group discussed what each of them was currently reading.
Virtual – Our virtual Library Book Group on Facebook currently has 61 members.  4 members of the group met to discuss Call of the Wild by Jack London.  We got this great feedback from a bookclub member: I want to thank you for the wonderful time at the book club yesterday. I love how you gave us the background on the author and how you led. I felt a very warm and welcoming spirit from you (Katie) and Thea. Thank you for organizing and leading the group.

Sit and Knit a Bit – virtual knitting group had 13 participants

Training – Library staff continue to do a lot of webinars/trainings.  We are currently focused on Readers’ Advisory.  Look for an announcement on how to get a curated collection of items with your current reading needs/preferences soon!
