Library Activities: March 2024

Alex Steinmetz joins Sandy and Hoodland Libraries as our graphic design and public relations Library Assistant!  Alex first joined the Library Advisory Board in January 2023, then began working as a substitute clerk for the libraries in August 2023.  She started in her new position In March 2024.  Alex is a whiz at creating social media campaigns.  Look for her posts on Facebook, Instagram, and NextDoor, as well as a fresh eye on our library fliers and digital designs.

Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS)
ODHS is in the Library. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00am – 3:00pm for drop-in assistance.

Vista Apartments – 36 kids attended for literacy and STEM activities.

NEW *Pioneer Mobile Home Park – 35 kids and 10 adults attended this new monthly outreach event for rock painting and paracord keychains

LEGO Club – Sandy 20 kids and 11 adults, Hoodland 7 kids and 4 adults

STEM Club – 8 kids and 4 adults came to make Mason Bee Houses

Read to the Dog – 21 kids attended to read to Tanis

Reading Tutoring – 00 one hour sessions of reading tutoring  at Sandy (1 tutor and 1 student each) 0 hour at Hoodland.

Storytime videos were posted in our Facebook Group: Sandy and Hoodland Libraries – Storytime Parents Group.  Use numbers were recorded after 1 week. All Storytimes were presented by librarian Monica Smith – unless otherwise noted.

MakerSpace – 10 teens attended our Makerspace Camp at the Community Center.  We made LED lit Hexagons.

Teen Hangout – 3 teens attended to make Bath Bombs

Teen Library Advisory Board (TLAB) – 3 teens attended to work on their Culinary World Tour program

Special
Author Talk – Bayocean: Atlantis of Oregon by Jerry Sutherland.  15 people attended this talk about the 1906 vision of T. B. Potter and his partner, Harkness Chapin, Bayocean was to be a grand resort town located along the Tillamook Spit that protects Tillamook Bay from the Pacific Ocean.

5-Common Strategies for Estate Planning – 35 people attended this talk by Jamie Worley of AFEPI NW: Preserving Your Legacy.

Adult Egg Hunt – 33 people attended this fun event for seniors and adults with disabilities.  This program was in coordination with Parks and Recreation and Transit Departments.

Take & Make – 100 (80 Sandy and 20 Hoodland). Ribbon Bookmarks.  Take & Make available beginning on the 15th day of the month.

Blood drive with the American Red Cross – 50 people attended, 44 donors

Spanish Language Class – 21 people attended with one teacher

Creation Station – Creation Station is a twice monthly interactive program that welcomes adults with disabilities.  17 people attended on the 2nd Monday of the month and 13 attended on the 4th Monday.

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Class – 15 people attended with 1 teacher
ESOL tutor – 00 one hour sessions (1 tutor and 1 student each)

Writing Group  – 26 people attended our writing group 

Fiber Arts Circle – 37 people attended in the Fireplace Room on Tuesday afternoons

Dungeons & Dragons – 7 people attended 

Computer Classes – 1 attended Microsoft Word, and 1 attended Google Tools classes

NEW *Mahjong – 4 people attended this new monthly program at Hoodland.  Learn Mahjong and play!

We currently have an exhibit provided by the North American Bigfoot Center in Boring OR.  Come in to view it through June 8th.
