Services
On April 15th, we had our Grand Opening of the Sandy Seed Library. 62 people attended. Staff member Susie Jenkins, and a large number of volunteers and sponsors made this new program in the library start out great. Come check out our seed library!  “It’ll grow on you”.

 

 

 

 

Programs

Special
15 Teens attended our Teen Paint Nite in April.

 

30 teens attended our terrarium building workshop on the Sandy Seed Library Grand opening day.

We had a talk by local author Mike Jordan. 13 people came to listen to him speak about the writing process.

 

61 people came to our Family Friendly Poetry Slam! at Sandy. The winning poets were:

Grand Prize: Slylar Olsen  with a poem called “Vultures”. (She was in the age 14-18 category)
Honorable mentions for each category:

Age 8-13 – Greta Freet with “Celebrating My Soccer Game”

Age 14-18 – Sayge Noakes with “When It’s Cold Out”

Adult – Phyllis Joy Martin with “Ode to Johnny Appleseed”

18 people attended our Open Mic Poetry Night at Hoodland! A great time was had by readers and listeners alike.

13 people attended our Adult Paint Nite with Melissa Lawrence.

Dia de los Ninos was a huge success! Once again planned by Katie Murphy with members of the Hispanic Community, it ranged throughout the entire Library and outdoors for 2 hours.  About 300 people came to this event.

 

 

 

 

 

Ongoing
Sandy Kids Club had 57 parents and kids. Hoodland Kids Art Club had 7 parents and kids attend.

Storytimes: Preschool 60 parents and kids, Wee Ones 152 parents and kids, Hoodland 56 parents and kids.

60 teens attended Game Factory Coding Club, 37 attended Makerspace, 51 attended Anime Club.

100 people attended Library Coffee House to hear Eric Kallio play slide and finger-style guitar.  5 kids participated in the craft.

34 Adults and 24 kids attended our ESOL English classes. We had 22 volunteer helpers.

8 people attended the Hoodland Bookgroup to discuss the Book True Grit by Charles Portis.

Outreach
We attended 4 Kindergarten Roundups in April – Sandy Grade, Naas, Firwood, and Kelso. We talked with 24 parents and 27 kids.

Vista Apartments now regularly has about 4 parents attending the weekly program for kids! We went 3 out of 4 weeks in April, and had 60 kids attend to do literacy and/or STEM based activities.

Sandy Library staff and teen volunteers had a booth at the first Mt Hood Farmers Market on April 28th. One staff person and 4 volunteers talked with 71 people, and checked out 85 seeds from the Sandy Seed Library. We issued one new library card!

Buildings
The Hoodland Library got tagged for RFID on April 30th! It took 8 staff members and 14 volunteers one full 8 hour day to tag most of the 10,000 items that Hooldand has on their shelves.

Special Programs

 

Kids
We held Dr Seuss Birthday parties at Sandy and Hoodland! 23 kids and 15 adults came to Sandy, and 11 kids and 6 parents came to Hoodland to watch a Dr. Seuss movie and eat cupcakes!

Living Way Preschool (7 kids and 7 adults) and Little Cubs Preschool (17 kids and 5 adults) visited the library in March.

 

 

Welches School had an Architect create projects with kids in 3rd and 5th grades.  The projects were displayed at the Hoodland Library from March 20th – April 3rd.  The kids created diaramas of school playground equipment.  There was a reception at the library on March 22nd that 102 parents and kids attended.

Teens
Our Jeopardy Trivia Night had 22 teens attend to duel it out. Three winners got a $25 Amazon gift card.

We talked with 10 teens and 9 adults at the Job Fair with Antfarm. We talked with them about the Job and Career Accelerator database, had books on jobs and careers to check out, and advertised positions for the summer camp the City of Sandy is doing (with Camp Namanu).

Adults
20 people attended our Adult Paint Nite with Library Advisory Board member Melissa Lawrence.

We held a “Know Your Rights” Program in partnership with Programa Hispano at VISTA Apartments.  35 people came.

Preschool Storytime at Sandy had 62 kids and 42 adults, Wee ones at Sandy had 95 kids and and 93 adults, Hoodland Story time had 41 kids and 26 adults.

Vista Apartments had 106 kids and 14 adults attend to do literacy activities.

Saturday Afternoon Kids’ Club        Art Club at Sandy had 25 kids and 25 parents come to make crayon art with Kylie Shai, a Sandy High School student working on her senior project.

Hoodland had 14 kids and 9 adults come to play LEGOS and make art projects in the month of March.

 

Teens
29 teens attended the twice monthly MakerSpace program.
47 teens attended the twice monthly Anime Club.
23 teens attended the thrice a month Game Factory.
12 teens attended the Teen Library Advisory Board meeting.

Adults
ESOL Classes had 53 students and 23 volunteer teacher helpers in the month of March!

168 people came to hear Aaron Meyer play his violin at Library Coffee House.

We held a talk by The Early Assessment and Support Alliance (EASA). EASA is an early intervention program for adolescents and young adults experiencing psychosis for the first time. 2 people attended.

 

 

Our newly revived Photography Group had 7 people attend for Camera 101 lessons.  Camera 101 will continue on April 20th.

The Hoodland Book Group had 6 people attend to discuss the book Maytrees by Annie Dillard.

Hoodland did a total of 7 Public Notaries in March.

Celebrations
On May 6th, we celebrated 5 years in our new Sandy Library building!  We had cupcakes and waived $5 in fines for anyone who came in the door on that day.  We waived a total of $258.55.

Teens
On 2/17 we held our very first Paint Nite at the Sandy Library.  Paint Nites are being taught by Melissa Lawrence who is a member of the Library Advisry Board and formerly worked for Vine Gogh in Portland.  17 kids attended, and had a great night!  We will continue to have paint nites for both teens and adults.  Our next class for adults is on March 17th!

No more dieting with Dr. Victoria Larson

Adults

Our Watercolor Adventure Class was postponed from January because of incelement weather.  This class was taught by local artist Eileen Holzman, and had an attendance of 15 adults.

“No More Dieting”, a presentation by Dr. Victoria Lawrence on Febraury 24th had 13 people in attendance.

Family

Brady Goss, phenomenal honky-tonk piano player & singer was our Coffe House musician on February 3rd.  94 people braved the weather to come see him!

ESOL – English Language and Culture Class had a diffciult time in February becuse of fear in the Hispanic community.  After 2 classes with no attendance, the rest of the month had 12 students make it to the library.
7 people made it to the Book Club at Hoodland to discuss Station Eleven.
6 people at the Hoodland Library utilized our free Public Notary service.

Meetings, etc
Rebecca Robinowtiz & Monica Smith attended the Youth Service Provider Network meeting on 2/1, This presentation focused on Social Media and the Impact on Youth.  Sara McClurg, the Crime Prevention Specialist for Clackamas County Sheriff Office, presented on Internet Safety and the most recent threat and impacts on youth. Presentation included:

  • Online predators
  • Cyber Bullying
  • Theft of personal information
  • Internet slang
  • Social Networking
  • Sexting
  • Risky cell phone apps like Instagram and Snapchat
  • Online game sites

Sarah McIntyre assisted the City in interviews for the new Community Services Director on 2/2.  There were a great group of candidates for the position.  Welcome Tanya Richardson!

On 2/21 Chris WIlhemi and Sarah McIntyre met with Greg Williams and staff from the LINCC Network Office to review the Sandy and Hoodland Library buildings for RFID tagging. RFID tagging is scheduled at HO on 4/30 (they are closed on Sundays), and at Sandy on May 1st-5th. The Sandy Library will be closed during the tagging. If you are detail oriented, and would like to volunteer at least 4 hours of your time, contact Chris Wilhelmi at the Sandy Library.  All library programs will continue as normal this week in the Community Room, and we will reopen in time for First Friday on May 5th.

Sarah McIntyre attended the Oregon Public Library Director’s Meeting on 2/22. We got an update from State Librarian Marykay Dahlgreen, an update on Douglas County Libraries (which are closing), talked about information literacy in the age of fake news, and library service to people facing homelessness.

On 2/25 Rebecca Robinowtiz and a local teen attended a meeting to choose the winner of the Teen Art Contest for LINCC Libraries. The 2017 WINNER is Lexie Ng (8th grader) from the West Linn Library.  Lexie was awarded a $100 cash card.  The winning entry is to the left:

The Teen Lock-In with Antfarm had 108 attendees! It was a fun night of karaoke at Antfarm, and Wii + games at the library.

Our January Mind, Body, Spirit Program: Watercolor Adventure was postponed until February because of inclement weather.

Dare to Download!

As part of our e-book and e-audiobook awareness week Dare to Download! January 9-15, we raffled off a  Kindle Fire to one lucky winner.  Congratulations to Barbara Lawrence from the Hoodland Service area!

Adults

Our First Friday Library Coffee House with the Doubleclicks was a fun and zany musical adventure that 84 people attended.

ESOL Classes (English for Speakers of Other Languages) had 31 students, and 10 volunteer shadowers!  This was with the cancellation of 3 classes due to inclement weather.

On December 1st, 5 Adults attended our board game night as part of our Mind, Body, Spirit series.

The Clackamas County Arts Alliance installed an exhibit by photographer Eric Griswold of West Linn.

Fun  On December 4th, staff of the Sandy and Hoodland Libraries ran (or walked) the Jingle Bell Run in downtown Portland.  12 staff members joined in, and we raised $1400 for the Arthritis Foundation.  After the run, we all went out to brunch before the library opened.  This was our staff Holiday event.

On November 10th, we held a Scholarship & Financial Aid Workshop in coordination with College Goal Oregon’s Lisa Brookshier, MBA & ASPIRE Access Specialist. The event included scholarship essay writing and application tips and hands-on-help with FAFSA applications from FAFSA pros. 8 people took advantage of this great opportunity.

Adult
On November 3rd, 9 people came to our film screening of Xmas without China.

caroleeromeoOn November 4th, 90 people came to our Library Coffee House featuring a folk anthology by Romeo and Carolee Carrera.

On November 12th, 11 people came to Mike Jordan’s author talk at Hoodland. Mr Jordan wrote much of his recent book at the Hoodland Library! FInd out more about Mike Jordan and his books here.

On November 13th, 30 people came to listen to the Peter Wigmore to hear about his family’s experiences during the Holocaust.

On November 14th, 26 people came to Tim Palmer’s author talk and slide show on the Rivers of Oregon. See more about Tim and his beautiful book here.

On November 17th, 22 people came to the film screening of feature-length documentary film Gaining Ground by Elaine Velazquez and Barbara Bernstein that tells personal stories of farmers making extraordinary changes in their farming practices to feed their local communities sustainably grown produce and grains. 79 people attended Saturday Afternoon Kids’ Club in Sandy, and 11 attended in Hoodland.

86 people attended Preschool storytime and 114 attended Toddler Time in Sandy. 18 people attended storytime in Hoodland.

horadecuentosOn November 7th we held our first quarterly (rather than weekly) Hora de Cuentos with Claudia Osario. 14 people attended this extremely vivacious storyteller’s program.

Teens
17 people attended Game Factory – our Teen coding club.

5 people came to out T-LAB (Teen – Library Advisory Board) meeting to help us plan our teen programs.

9 people came to Anime Club, and 1 came to Teen Book Club.

Adults
Our ESOL classes were very well attended right through our last date for this calendar year in November. Our last day of class was November 16th. We plan to start these classes up again January 10th. They will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 12-1:30pm. We are also partnering with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints starting in January. They will be holding an additional ESOL class on Wednesday evenings.

10 people attended our Hoodland Book Group this month to discuss Girl on the Train.

7 Public Notaries were done in Hoodland.

Outreach
On November 10th, we talked to 21 people at the Headstart Family Night., We issued 6 library cards and checked out 2 books.

We did literacy activities with 62 kids and 12 adults at Vista Apartments.

Strategic Planning
Our final Strategic Planning Committee Meetings took place this month. The Strategic Planning Survey went live on December 13th. Take the survey here to help us determine our priorities going forward, it should take you about 10-15 minutes if you finish all the questions.  75 people have already taken the survey!  I should have a Draft of the Strategic Plan for Sandy and Hoodland Libraries before the City Council in February.

Meetings
On November 17th, Thea Kuziemski and Sarah McIntyre met with Dylon Blaylock from Clackamas County as well as 5 other City officials within the County to discuss ways of maximizing our Social Media presences through working together.

On November 18th, Directors in LINCC (Libraries IN Clackamas County) met with Directors in WCCLS (Washington County Cooperative Library Services) to discuss regional policies, and share information.

Special Programs
We had 1115 kids come to play games and get candy for Trick or Treat Trail on October 29th!

file_000-5On October 21st, 180 people (mostly teens) attended the Haunted Library and Creepy Carnival! The dunk tank was a big hit. A special thank you to Officer Olmos who did 2 turns in the dunk tank, and to Officer Steffenson for putting up with the smoke alarm going off in the library! Now we know what to do for next year so that this does not happen again.

Our Chair Yoga Class for adults had great attendance for the 4 week class with an average of 15 people attending each week.

Cheryl Hill’s author talk on October 10th on the Fire Lookouts of Oregon had an attendance of 23.

We saw 60 kids and parents for literacy activities at Vista Apartments.

Teen Game Factory had 43 teens attend. TAB had 77 people attend to work on the Haunted Library and Creepy Carnival. Teen Book club had 3 people attend, and Anime Club had 15 people in attendance.

We held one Book a Librarian session on how to use the library catalog.

6 people attended Hoodland’s Book Group to discuss Walking on Water, and 8 people attended Gypsie Raleigh’s author talk at Hoodland. Gypsie is the author of Soolie Beetch and the Dying Light.

Our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Classes continue to be popular on both days, with approximately 6-8 adult at each class, and 8-10 kids.

Outreach
On 10/8, we attended the Oral Hull Family Fall Festival ans talked to 58 people about library services and programs.

We attended the Kelso Elementary School open house on 10/25 and talked to 41 parents and kids.

Strategic Planning

The Strategic Planning Committee continued to meet in October.  We are making great progress on a Strategic Plan for the Sandy and Hoodland Public Libraries.  It should come before the City Council for approval in February 2017.

Training

Libraries in Clackamas County held our second annual all staff training on October 10th.  We had a great day learning about building resiliency with Clackamas County trainer Jeri Oswalt and mental model busting with Cheryl Gould for all staff.  There were individual breakout sessions on Library Security (thanks to Chief Yamashita!), Singing and Signing with Storytime, Cataloging digital information, and Readers’ Advisory.

Storytimes at Sandy had 99 kids and 97 adult attend, Hoodland had 38 kids and 26 adults attend.

In our outreach efforts at the Vista Apartments, we checked out books and did literacy based activities with 57 kids.

Adult Programs

On September 1st. the Sandy Library helped to host the Black Swan Youth Theatre in Meinig Park.  50 People attended Shakespeare’s As You Like It.

Our Library Coffee House on September 2nd with Eric John Kaiser, Portland’s own French Troubadour had 93 people attend.

September 14th, we held our last Readers’ Theatre Program in conjunction with Actor’s Dojo before taking several months hiatus.  Look for more Reader’s Theatre programs next summer.

On September 15th, we hosted Michael P Jones.  He lectured about Portland’s infamous Shanghai Tunnels to 28 eager individuals.

Art Exhibits

Artist Exhibit Program of www.clackamasartsalliance.org presents watercolor paintings of Cheryl Butterfield.  This exhibit will be up through NovemberFile_002 (1).

Meetings

Sarah attended the annual Public Library Directors of Oregon meeting at the Hillsboro Library on September 23rd.

Library Activities: August 2016

Programs

TeenTuesdaysTeen Tuesdays Open Gaming Lab was held each Tuesday in August.  37 Teens attended these programs.

On August 2nd, we partnered with the Oregon Food Bank and Oregon Humanities for a discussion titled “Good Food, Bad Food: Agriculture, Ethics, & Personal Choice” led by author Kristy Athens

We held our final kids’ Summer Reading programs at Vista apartments.  2 weeks of Art with Becky Hawley.  The kids did leaf painting, and created collages.  41 kids participated.

AugustCoffeeHouse (1)On August 5th, we held our monthly Library Coffee House.  Kelsey and the Next Right Thing played to a crowd of 150 people.

On August 6th, we started our 4 week swing dance program for adults – held at the Sandy Community Center.  30 excited people learned the basics of swing dancing!  View a video from the class here.

DojoLogo-page-001On August 10th, Actors Dojo presented Reader’s Theatre Plaza Suite by Neil Simon.

On August 23rd, we held our pilot English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) class at the Sandy Library.  We had an enthusiastic group of teaching assistants and students!  These drop-in ESOL classes will be held at the Sandy Library every Tuesday and Wednesday starting September 27th!

Outreach
At the end of August, Library staff attended Open Houses at Kelso Elementary, Firwood Elementary, Sandy Grade School, and Cedar Ridge Middle School to issue library cards and talk about library programs with parents and kids. Staff talked to 105 people at these events.

 

 

Volunteer Recognition

The Sandy and Hoodland Libraries closed at 5pm on August 31st so that staff could recognize our 80+ volunteers who assist us on a day to day basis.  Library staff were in charge of the Sundae Bar – which was a great success!

The Library Coffee House took place on July 1st, and Biddy on the Bench played their Old-world Folk, Irish Traditional, Shanty music for an appreciative audience of 97 people.

 

Susie Jenkins led our adult Journal Writing class that began on July 2nd.  This was a four week class that 10 people attended.

Tuesdays in July continued our Teen Tuesday’s Open Gaming Lab.  16 Teens attended throughout the month.

Actor’s Dojo presented Neil Simon’s Star Spangled Girl on July 13th for an eager audience of 22 people.

We held an informational/recruitment meeting for volunteers to help teach English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Classes.  25 prospective volunteers were there to learn about this exciting program under People, Places, Things, LLC.  We will be holding a student recruitment/pilot class from 6-7:30 on the evening of August 23rd!

The Lunch Bunch, a group from Oral Hull wanted advice on how to begin a book club.  Maureen Skinner, Reference Librarian spoke to 20 people on July 16th.

The Library had a table at Oral Hull’s first Sip, Eat, Stroll fundraiser on July 23rd.  We spoke with 34 about library services.

Training

Chief Yamashita of the Sandy Police Department held a self-defense class for library staff.  We learned a great deal, and got practice hands on practice.
